Lesbians versus Lesbians on the Isle of Lesbos

Foreign Correspondent: Lesbians V Lesbians on Lesbos, reporter Helen Vatsikopoulos

"There’s a war brewing in the Greek Islands.

The argument goes way back to Sappho. Born on Lesbos in the sixth century before Christ, Sappho was a poet, a muse and is claimed by some to be the world’s first feminist.

She became such a gay icon that her birthplace was adopted internationally as a name for gay women.

The trouble is no one asked the islanders if they wanted to share the name and that’s why native Lesbians have taken the other lesbians to court over who has the right to call themselves lesbians.

Reporter Helen Vatsikopoulos met those on both sides of this battle over identity and pride. Dimitris Lambrou is fighting to restrict Lesbian identity to the residents of Lesbos - but homosexual women say his actions deny their human rights."
